Press Release - Montreal Canadiens Sign Joonas Nattinen

Canadiens sign centreman Joonas Nattinen to a three-year contract

Thursday, 26.05.2011 / 11:15 AM / News

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Thursday the signing of centreman Joonas Nattinen to a three-year, two-way contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Joonas Nattinen. Joonas is a promising young player with size and skills. Despite his young age, he proved to be a very good player in a competitive professional league in Finland for the past two seasons, and also was a key member of the Finnish national team at the World Juniors last year,” said Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.

Nattinen registered two assists and served 12 penalty minutes in 21 games with Espoo and Hämeenlinna of the SM-Liiga (Finland) in 2010-11. Nattinen, 20, added two assists in four games with Espoo (Junior A SM-Liiga) and Suomi (Finland2).

In three seasons with Espoo and Hämeenlinna in the SM-Liiga, the 6’2’’, 186 lbs centreman totalled 5 assists with 20 penalty minutes in 58 games. Nattinen recorded 55 points (16 goals, 39 assists) in 51 career games in the Junior A SM-Liiga.

Nattinen was part of the Finnish team at the last three World Junior Championships (Ottawa – 2009, Saskatchewan – 2010 and Buffalo – 2011). He registered 10 points (4 goals, 6 assists) in 18 contests, including three goals in six games at the 2011 Championship.

A native of Jämsä, Finland, Nattinen was the Canadiens’ second pick (third round, 65th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

All-Star Stanley Cup Goaltending No Longer Necessary/New Sunday Shinny Podcast

by Kamal Panesar

Good morning hockey addicts!

I've got another brief break in baby planning/preparation so I thought I'd poke my head in to offer a few thoughts on the playoffs.

The first thing that I notice, when looking at the two conference finals that are going on, is an incredible lack of proven goaltending.

Now before you jump down my throat on that one, allow me to explain.

I'm Not Buying It

Excluding the recent insertion of Mike Smith into the Tampa Bay cage—he is also unproven—the four netminders left are Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo, Dwayne Roloson and Antti Niemi.

I'm sure the first thing people will say to me is that Luongo has an Olympic Gold Medal, Antti Niemi has a Stanley Cup ring and Tim Thomas won the Vezina a few seasons ago.

As for Roloson, he has had a respectable, if undecorated, career.

So let's start with the Luongo argument.

Yes, he has an Olympic Gold and was the starter for the gold medal game, but Luongo got the job by default when Martin Brodeur faltered early. Moreover, Luongo didn't play tremendous hockey for Team Canada and the team won despite his average performance.

So far in the playoffs, Luongo has a middling .917 save percentage and a pedestrian 2.37 GAA. That the Canucks are one win away from the Stanley Cup final—they are also my pick to win the Cup—is due more to the tremendous skill and depth in front of him.

Antti Niemi is kind of in the same boat as Luongo, having won the cup with Chicago last year in the worst demonstration of Stanley Cup Final goaltending in NHL history. Philly too had horrible goaltending and both teams won the games they did despite their netminders.

So I don't give Niemi much clout in that argument. Plus, as well as he played during the season for San Jose, he is sitting on a .895 save percentage and a 3.33 GAA through 17 playoff games.

Ouch!

Tim Thomas, with a .931 save percentage and a 2.27 GAA, is a bit of a different story, having won the Vezina trophy in 2009 and being in line to win it again this season. That being said, I just don't buy it.

I watch this guy play and he lets in far too many bad goals for my comfort.

In addition, he came out of nowhere to win the 2009 Vezina and is suddenly supposed to be a goaltending phenom in his thirties? This with no previous record of greatness and with no prior pedigree?

That dog won't hunt.

That being said, every time I think he and the Bruins will get bounced from the playoffs Thomas comes up with a game saving performance. As such, in my books, he is the closest thing to being an established goaltender out of the remaining four.

Dwayne Roloson, who was pulled in his last start and sat as the backup to Mike Smith last night against Boston, is an aged journeyman goaltender. At 41 years of age, he played an excellent season to get the Bolts into the playoffs and all the way to the conference finals.

Yet when the chips were down, Roloson failed and his team is on the brink of elimination as such. Hardly Conn Smythe candidate performances.

The game has changed

So if none of the four remaining teams have exceptional goaltending, then why are they in the conference finals over other teams?

It is because the game has changed.

Philadelphia and Chicago demonstrated in last year's playoffs, that you no longer need to have lights-out goaltending to contend for or win the Stanley Cup. No longer are the virtuoso perfromances of Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur needed to win a championship. Nowadays, depth, an ability to remain relatively healthy and a little luck are usually all that is needed.

If you look at some of the players that are helping their teams win and scoring goals at opportune moments, it is not usually the top-line players. Players like Maxim Lapierre, Chris Higgins, Raffi Torres, Sean Bergenheim, Steve Downie, Dominic Moore, Devin Stoguchi, Logan Couture, Brad Marchard, Patrice Bergeron, Mark Recchi, Logan and other, are the ones that help a team contend for the Cup.

Oh sure, you still need top line scoring but without four lines of depth, it is impossible to win. In the past, you were perhaps able to win or make it to the final on the back of spectacular goaltending. While all-star goaltending can still take you all the way, you generally need much more than just that to win in today's NHL.

Press Release - Montreal Canadiens Sign Alexei Emelin

CANADIENS SIGN DEFENSEMAN ALEXSEY EMELIN TO A ONE-YEAR CONTRACT

MONTREAL (May 17, 2011) – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of defenseman Alexsey Emelin to a one-year, two-way contract (2011-12). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Alexsey Emelin. Alexsey is a steady, physical defenseman with strong skating ability. The experience he has acquired in the KHL over the past few years will make for a smooth transition to the NHL,” said Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.

Emelin registered 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists), leading his team defensemen in goals, playing 52 games with the Kazan Ak Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in 2010-11. Seven of his goals were scored on the powerplay. Emelin, 25, recorded 110 shots on goal, while averaging 21:18 seconds of ice time per game. He displayed a +17 plus/minus differential and served 92 penalty minutes.

In three complete seasons with the Kazan Ak Bars, the 6’2’’, 223 lbs defenseman totaled 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) with 200 penalty minutes in 149 games, while maintaining a +22 plus/minus differential. Emelin totaled 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in 38 career KHL playoff contests.

Emelin, who was part of the Russian team at the 2011 World Championship in Slovakia, was a member of the Russian team that captured silver at the 2010 World Championship in Cologne, Germany and participated in the 2007 World Championship in Moscow. He was on the Russian team that won the silver medal at the 2006 World Junior Championship in Vancouver.

A native of Togliatti, Russia, Emelin was the Canadiens’ second pick (third round, 84th overall) at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Montreal Canadiens: New Sunday Shinny, Should Habs sign Jaromir Jagr?

by Kamal Panesar

Greetings folks! I'm popping my head out of my cave during a minor break in renos to discuss a little puck.

So, if you haven't already heard, Jaromir Jagr said to the press—after the Czech Republic won the bronze medal in the Worlds—that he would consider playing for the Penguins, Rangers or Canadiens in an NHL return.

He went on to say that hockey in Montreal and Canada is crazy and unlike anywhere else. He said he's never played in Canada and would like to but that "...you never know."

Sounds pretty clear that he would love playing in Montreal with fellow countryman Tomas Plekanec.

We discussed this topic on the Sunday Shinny this past weekend (you can listen to it below). In short, my view is that Jagr is more of a plan 'B' to me, since he isn't a long term solution. The Habs desperately need more scoring up front and Jagr, playing on a line with Plekanec and Michael Cammalleri, would surely help in the department.

He wouldn't put up 100 points but would likely put up 60.

That being said, he is not likely to play more than a year or so and, being in a building mode, the Canadiens are better off looking for longer term help. Try Brooks Laich or Ville Leino or even my personal favorite, Curtis Glencross.

Failing the ability to land some kind of longer term help I wouldn't hesitate to bring in Jagr for a year or two.

Word also has it that Habs' GM, Pierre Gauthier, hasn't yet ruled out signing Jagr so the plot is certainly thickening!

What are your thoughts? Would you take a flyer on Jagr?

Possible Alexei Yemelin Signing Changes Montreal Canadiens' Defensive Squad

by Kamal Panesar

The word around the league this morning is that the Montreal Canadiens are on the verge of signing long awaited Russian defensive prospect, Alexei Yemelin to a one-year deal.

Originally drafted in the third round, 84th overall by the Montreal Canadiens, Yemelin has been hesitant to make the leap to North America. The Canadiens have been on the verge of signing Yemelin several times over the last seven years, only to have the rug pulled out from under them at the last minute.

As such, I'd hold judgment on the situation until something official comes out.

That being said, when TSN's Bob McKenzie said it is signed and sealed—as he did today—it sounds as good as gold.

Official word next week

It was Le Journal de Montreal's Marc de Foy who originally broke the story and he is indicating that the deal will be made official next week. Habs' GM Pierre Gauthier will be sitting down with Yemelin—and Andrei Markov—agent, Don Meehan, next week and it is believed that the announcement will come after that meeting.

All indications are that it is a one-year deal that stipulates Yemelin can return to Russian, rather than reporting to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs, if he doesn't make the Habs out of training camp.

This is a rare occurrence, to be sure, but the only way the Habs would get a shot at seeing him in a uniform.

Here are a few news pieces on Yemelin from today:

Journal de Montreal, Hockey Inside/Out, RDS, Cyberpresse.ca

Player Profile

For those who don't know or have forgotten, since it's been so long, Yemelin is exactly the type of defensemen the Habs need.

A big, strong, hard-hitting, tough-as-nails stay-at-home defenseman who has the ability to agitate the opposition while clearing them from the front of the net.

The concern is that, playing in the KHL for so many years where his aggressive style is punished more than rewarded; Yemelin has spent too much time in the penalty box overseas.

Keep in mind that he is not a dirty player, just one that plays with an edge.

As such, his robust style fits well in the NHL game but not some much overseas where the game is more skill-focused.

The best comparable for Yemelin would be a Darius Kasparaitis-type player.

So what's next?

If I was a betting man, I'd say that barring a major meltdown, Yemelin will make the Habs' squad out of camp. This is a player who can help the team and they would rather have him learn on the job in Montreal than be lost forever in Russia.

Montreal is more than likely going to come to terms on a new agreement with Andrei Markov over the next few weeks, meaning that he can play a mentoring role for his Russian compatriot next season.

If Yemelin makes the team, he will be an excellent addition to a blueline that will potentially count on Markov, Josh Gorges, Hal Gill, P.K. Subban, Yannick Weber and Jaroslav Spacek.

The deal sounds like a no-brainer to me, since this is the only way Yemelin will come to training camp. From there, it really comes down to how much he wants to play in North America versus Russia.

Only time will tell but for now, this is a good step in the right direction.
